South African business is confronting global competition that is becoming increasingly fierce, forcing business to find ways to get quality products at competitive prices to the marketplace with limited resources at their disposal. A serious lack of skilled management is facing South African business and issues such as the shift towards knowledge-based economic activities and the HIV/Aids crisis will continue to worsen the situation. Few organisations can afford the losses that may arise through bad decision-making by inexperienced managers and future successful businesses will be those that realise the important role of training and education. South African businesses have little choice but to substantially increase their commitment to management training and skills development. The "talk and chalk" methodology of management skills has, however, reached the stage where it can no longer fulfil the needs of the South African market; technological advances as well as pressures to increase the general level of education in the country are dictating that the situation must change. Business needs to acquire greater sophistication and more cost-effective and durable means of delivering and distributing training to the workforce.
